Somatic Psychotherapy and Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Psychotherapy is therapy that incorporates the experience of the body and seeks to bridge the body and mind as a holistic approach. I have found that many symptoms, memories, and beliefs exist in the whole human system. Only addressing a single aspect of someone’s experience in life seems to be limiting and less effective when it comes to creating lasting change.

Somatic Experiencing (SE ) is a modality originated by Peter Levine and can be applied in a variety of settings. The primary goal of SE is to modify the trauma-related stress response through bottom-up processing.

“It is based on a multidisciplinary intersection of physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience, indigenous healing practices, and medical biophysics and has been clinically applied for more than four decades.

The SE approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma. It offers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight or freeze responses and provides clinical tools to resolve these fixated physiological states. SE provides effective skills appropriate to a variety of healing professions including mental health, medicine, physical and occupational therapies, bodywork, addiction treatment, first response, education, and others.”- traumahealing.org

 FAQs

  • In addition to my 3 years of training to become a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP™), I completed training in Touch Skills for Trauma Therapists with Kathy Kain.

This training teaches how to effectively support trauma resolution and other symptoms through safe, gentle, intentional touch. All touch work is done fully clothed and is not a requirement of any client.
